ROOT CANAL THERAPY

Why is Root Canal Therapy recommended?

Inside each tooth, is a fine space called the root canal, containing the dental pulp which is made up of nerves and blood vessels. If the dental pulp becomes diseased or dies, a toothache or an abscess may occur. In the past, these problem teeth resulted in only one option – an extraction. However now we can offer you root canal treatment to help preserve and retain such teeth.
A Root Canal Treatment is needed for the relief of pain and also to keep the tooth.

A number of conditions can lead to dental pulp damage, (although sometimes no apparent cause can be determined):

  • Decay
  • Deep Fillings
  • Trauma
  • Tooth Fracture
  • Infection

Benefits of a root canal treatment may include:

  • Preservation of the involved existing tooth
  • Avoidance of restorative replacement with a bridge, implant or denture.
  • Preservation of the underlying bone support, providing a stronger abutment tooth for a bridge or partial if other teeth are missing.
  • Elimination of pain.

Restorations Following Root Canal Therapy

It is very important that any restoration placed onto a tooth that has had a root canal treatment adequately seals the root filling from infection by bacteria from the mouth and provides strong support for continued daily use. Teeth that have had a root canal treatment are weaker and often need large fillings. It is highly recommended in most cases to have a crown.
